Fayetteville Housing Authority Works to Provide More Public Housing For Locals

Thousands of people don’t know where they will sleep in Northwest Arkansas

And one local organization is working to help find public housing for those in need.

“When somebody gets housing and they get the opportunity to get the keys to their own place and their own safety, the work just melts away,” said Fayetteville Housing Authority Executive Director, Angela Belford.

The Fayetteville Housing Authority’s Section 8 Voucher Program is dedicated to helping homeless locals find their new home

“It’s building those relationships. You see people at their worst and then you actually see them in the process of being at their best,” said Fayetteville Housing Authority Section 8 Specialist Shawtill Roberts.

Over 20 locals currently have vouchers from the FHA to receive public housing such as Hillcrest Towers.

But due to a lack of resources some may never find a home. New changes are aiming to fix that.

“Often times what ends up happening because of limited staffing we have to say here’s your voucher and here’s a list of landlords that will work with us, good luck,” said Belford.

To better accommodate locals a housing navigator position will be added as a liaison between clients and landlords.

Changes will also be made to their waiting list criteria to help people with greater challenges.

“We can prioritize people that have been Washington County residents, we can prioritize off of disabilities, or even whether or not you have small children in the home,” said Belford.

FHA said these changes will help it continue to make a difference in the area.

“We have the ability to help people in their times of need and we’re not a crutch, we’re to assist them and help them in their lives. I want people to know that we’re here for our customers but yet we’re here to build families,” said Roberts.
