Fayetteville Kids Learn What It’s Like to Live With Disabilities

Over 600 students at Vandergriff Elementary had the chance to experience what life is like for students who live with physical impairments or learning disabilities.

The first ever Diverse Abilities Day allowed the students to ask questions and learn ways to include all students through passion, acceptance and understanding.

“They’re doing different activities to put themselves in the kids’ shoes that might be dealing with that, so not only is it building awareness, but it’s also building empathy,” said Kyler Verhelst, teacher at Vandergriff Elementary.

Verhelst said almost every classroom at Vandergriff has a student with a disability and the hope is to familiarize kids before they enter middle school.
