Fayetteville School Board candidate getting heat about social media feed

Dwight Gonzales, a Fayetteville School Board candidate, is feeling the heat from voters after a screenshot of his Instagram feed was shared on Facebook.

In May, Gonzales will run for Fayetteville School Board Zone 5 against incumbent Tim Hudson, who has served on the board since 2004.

With two candidates, social media users are looking closely at both. One user said Gonzales is not the right person for the job after seeing his Instagram account saturated with guns.

“I’m definitely pro-gun,” Gonzales said. “I do a lot of building and maintenance on weapons for law enforcement officers which in turn keep us safe. But I’ve never advocated for guns in our schools, especially Fayetteville Public Schools.”

Gonzales said he feels it’s up to each individual school district to make the decision of arming staff for student safety. On Hudson’s side, he said the district recently adopted an idea from the School Safety and Security Task Force.

“The recommendation from that group is that we consider adding additional school resource officers. These are qualified, trained police officers to be on our campus,” Hudson said.

When it comes to ending mass school shootings, Gonzales said the issue isn’t just guns.

“I think what we need to get at is the heart of these issues of these school shootings which is definitely deep social issues, mental health issues that we need to address,” Gonzales said.

The Facebook post also mentioned Gonzales is a teacher in the district.

Arkansas law states “no person who is elected to a school district board of directors shall be eligible for employment in that same district.”

However, Gonzales said he is a volunteer at Fayetteville Christian School, which still makes him eligible.

Early voting for the Fayetteville School Board seat starts Tuesday, May 14. Election day is Tuesday, May 21.
