The first Latina City Council member for the City of Fayetteville took her oath of office Thursday.

Sonia Gutiérrez won the Ward 1, Position 1 seat in a runoff race in early December.

Gutiérrez said her campaign focused on three key issues for the city.

“The three issues I ran on were financially fit, friendly and funky Fayetteville and all those involving, making sure that we have a great economy and that we’re inclusive and that we continue to support our local businesses and the art scene,”  Gutiérrez said.

Gutiérrez says one of her priorities is making housing more affordable in Fayetteville.
