Fiber Optic Construction Causing Headaches

The quest for faster internet speed is giving many Fayetteville community members a major headache.

“They came in, and basically destroyed certain areas,” said Christina Rogers, who lives in a Fayetteville neighborhood getting Fiber Optic updates.

AT&T is one of the many companies installing fiber optics for faster internet speeds.

“I’ve talked to several of my neighbors and they’e gone back in the backyards without their permission,” said Rogers.

According to Fayetteville city attorney Kit Williams, if a phone company has an easement then they aren’t required to give notice.

But they are required to clean up after themselves.

“They’re supposed to repair the property so it’s like or similar to what it was before they dug it up and put their lines in,” said Williams.

“There hasn’t been any type of safety. Like with the wiring or cones put up. We have kids,” said Rogers.

Between debris piling up to damaged sidewalks, she’s worried these eyesores won’t get fixed.

“They need to do better than that,” said Rogers.

Marc Dorn, a foreman for the construction company that’s working for AT&T, said the mess is a part of the business.

“We’re going to have to repair it, that phase is coming up now,” said Dorn.

But Rogers said she hasn’t had these problems with other companies.

“They did a mail in campaign, a call in campaign a flyer campaign. As far as AT&T and their contractors, we haven’t had that type of communication,” said Rogers.

Dorn said the neighborhood construction should wrap up in the next month.

“I’m glad to have an ending, but they need to fix what their process is,” said Rogers.

AT&T released this statement to KNWA, As we work to expand and enhance our fiber network to deliver ultra-high-speed internet access to the Fayetteville area, our goal is to minimize the effect on residents as much as possible. It is our practice to place door hangers and signage within subdivisions to identify what we’re doing and how residents can reach us in the event of an issue. If construction related issues do occur, we work quickly to resolve and restore any impacts from our work. If residents have any questions, we suggest they contact our construction help desk at 479-442-1904.”
