Food Insecurity Fought in Northwest Arkansas

News

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA) — Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield teamed up with the University of Arkansas Athletic Department and the Pack Shack to hand out food to food banks in Washington County.

Employees, department staff and student athletes packed 36,000 meals Monday to help fight food insecurity in Northwest Arkansas.

The Fearless Food Fight campaign is being held in celebration of Arkansas Blue Cross’ 70th anniversary with a goal to provide 700,000 meals throughout the state.

“Our student athletes have contributed over a thousand hours to the local community, just since the beginning of the school year. So, it really speaks to how important it is for them to give back and they do it with their time, effort and their energy,” said Erica Nelson, director of Student Athlete Development for the U of A.

The United States Department of Agriculture ranks Arkansas second in the country for the number of people facing food insecurity.

According to the recent report, roughly one in-five Arkansans don’t know where their next meal will come from.
