FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA) — A former Fayetteville IRS revenue agent was sentenced Friday to 4 years in federal prison.

Ryan Payne, 36, of Barling was convicted for false representation of a Social Security number and aggravated identity theft, according to a news release issued by Duane Kees, U.S. attorney for the Western District of Arkansas.

Payne was also sentenced to 3 years of supervised release and ordered to pay $9,953 in restitution, according to Kees.

The treasury inspector general for the Tax Administration launched a criminal investigation into Payne in 2015 regarding his employment at the IRS in Fayetteville.

Payne had conducted an official audit of a business for the tax year 2010. The business’ owner provided Payne a flash drive containing business records, as well as personal identifying information, Kees said.

Payne kept the flash drive after quitting his IRS job in January 2015. He compromised the business owner’s identity by setting up a credit account using the business owner’s name and Social Security number without authorization, Kees said.
