Former Sears location used to help displaced flood victims

News

The City of Fort Smith is using vacant buildings to provide relief to those displaced by flooding.

The old Sears building at Central Mall is now housing a multi-agency resource center.

This resource hub was mentioned in Monday night’s Chamber of Commerce meeting.

Kathleen Halliburton is a community outreach volunteer at Grace Community Church and said it’s crucial to lend a helping hand.

“Anyone that needs help in our community that needs assistance can come here and find the help that they need,” Halliburton said. “We’ve got multiple organizations that will be set up inside, so this will be the hub for all of this devastation going on in our community.”

Congressman Steve Womack and Senator John Boozman are currently working on a disaster declaration to increase recovery funds.
