The Fort Smith Police Department lobby is closed until further notice due to an individual bringing in an unknown residue.
Officers are available to escort visitors to an alternative access point.
According to the Fort Smith Police Department, an individual came into the foyer of the Fort Smith Police Department wearing only a coat early Tuesday morning.
The main lobby of the building was locked, so the individual did not have further access to the building.
An officer came into contact with a substance the individual had on him, later confirmed by the Fort Smith Fire Department to be lye.
The officer was exposed to the substance and has been treated and released. The individual’s burns were more extensive. He has been transported to an area hospital for further treatment.
The lobby will be closed until further notice.
