Fort Smith Police Make One Arrest in Sunday Morning Shooting, Investigation Continues

FORT SMITH, Ark. (KNWA) — Fort Smith Police arrested Kendall Rashad Newton, 38, in connection with a shooting on the 4600 Block of Plum Street early Sunday morning.

At approximately 1:26 a.m., Fort Smith Police were notified of a shooting at a residence on the 4600 block of Plum Street.

Witnesses say two males at the scene were involved in an altercation. Shots were fired and one of the rounds inadvertently struck the third female also at the scene. The female was struck in the right shoulder and treated locally before being transferred to another hospital. She is reportedly in stable condition.

Newton was charged with battery in the first degree using a firearm. He was booked at the Sebastian County Detention Center at approximately 10:00 a.m.

This is still an open investigation. The FSPD is seeking an additional person of interest. More information will be released as it becomes available.
