The Fort Smith Police Department has promoted a female officer for the first time in over 15 years.
Police Chief Nathaniel Clark promoted veteran officer Kelley Colton to the rank of sergeant during a small ceremony at the Police Department Friday.
Colton is the first female officer promoted within the department since Dawn Sprayberry was promoted to sergeant on Nov. 17, 2003, according to a news release issued by Sgt. Wendall Sampson.
Colton was hired Oct. 23, 1995, and has held numerous positions within the department. She became the department’s Accreditation Office manager and was instrumental in the department receiving its first four-year accreditation award, according to Sampson.
“Sergeant Colton was also named Officer of the Year in 2002 after she was recognized in the arrest of a murder suspect who fled the crime scene,” Sampson said.
Colton was honored in 2003 with both the American Legion’s Officer of the Year award and Jaycees Outstanding Young Law Enforcement Award.
The following three officers were also promoted: Darrin Phelps to the rank of sergeant, Keith Shelby to the rank of sergeant and Scott Jackson to the rank of lieutenant.
