The Fort Smith Police Department welcomed the arrival of 80 new Axon body cameras this week.
The city’s board of directors approved the purchase late last year.
The new cameras are being paid for by funds acquired from the city’s share of federal asset forfeitures.
Mitchell said the cameras are necessary to highlight the strengths of the department.
“Well, they are very important for 21 century policing,” said Aric Mitchell, public information officer for the Fort Smith Police Department. “We have, you know, a greater demand; the public demands more transparency. We want to give that to them. We also feel like they are an excellent tool for our officers because our officers… we wanna do the right thing.”
According to Axon’s website, each device and app work together with the officers Taser and weapons, and will send an alert to the camera to begin capturing vital footage.
From there the footage is easily uploaded to a website where law enforcement can review it.
