The Fort Smith City Council voted Tuesday to hold a special election on whether or not to pass a sales tax to fund construction on the long awaited U.S. Marshals Museum.

The special election will be held in March.

Voters will decide whether or not to approve a one cent sales tax that will be in effect from July 2019 to March 2020.

So far, $35 million has been raised toward construction of the Marshals Museum, but $16 million more is needed.

Jim Dunn, president of the U.S. Marshals Museum Foundation, spoke during the meeting and said that the sales tax would generate the needed funds. Dunn stressed that another sales tax for the museum would not be necessary after the sales tax up for vote runs its course.

The city is pursuing the sales tax because museum construction funds could not be fully obtained through grants and public funding.
