Meet Your Local Candidates Before the November Election

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KFTA) -- Over the next several weeks, the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce will host candidate forums at the Fayetteville Public Library.

Voters will have the chance to meet the people running for various county, city and state positions. Each forum lasts about an hour and candidates will speak on their platforms and answer questions from the public.

Becky Lewallen, county clerk incumbent, and opponent Emily Sledge both spoke at the September 4 meeting about how they would make the voting process easier for residents.

"I want to drive ways around voter registration making it easier for people to get those applications in on weekends and those evenings," Sledge said,

"The mobile voting is being able to take the poll to the voter rather than them come to the polls," Lewallen said.

The City Council Ward 1 candidates also spoke at the September 4 meeting. Sonia Gutierrez, Kristifer Paxton and Olivia Trimble are looking to fill the seat currently occupied by Adella Gray. They each

"I think probably the biggest thing right now for ward one is a lot of change happening as far as development," Gutierrez said. "So we have an opportunity to kind of embrace our local funky culture, our industrial culture, or go more towards a commercialization."

"We need to incorporate a diversity officer into the marketing and communications department in Fayetteville and rewrite HR 2.0 to make it a more diverse policy," Paxton said.

"We have a median age in Ward 1 of 29 years old. So we have a bunch of young people getting priced out of their neighborhoods who could use some jobs that pay well."
