Update: Man Faces Charges after Fort Smith Student Struck in Crosswalk

UPDATE (2 p.m.): 

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA) -- A 35-year-old man is facing charges after police say he struck a high school student using a crosswalk. 

The Fort Smith Police Department said Adam Shaffer was taken into custody and faces a charge of second-degree battery after investigators learned he was impaired on substances other than alcohol at the time. 

The injured student has been airlifted to a Little Rock hospital in critical condition.

Officers were called to the school at 7 a.m. after the crash.

Police said witnesses told them a truck (being driven by Shaffer) ran a red light and struck the student.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA) -- A pedestrian has been struck by a vehicle in Fort Smith.

According to Ft. Smith Police, the incident happened at Old Greenwood Rd and Gary St., located next to Southside High School. 

Officers say the pedestrian has been taken to Mercy Hospital with unknown injuries.
