FS residents eager to volunteer for United Way during historic flooding

News

The United Way of Fort Smith is seeing an influx of people wanting to volunteer.

For now, the group’s president tells everyone to be patient.

Numerous people are calling and signing up to volunteer, but with flooding still active, it’s hard to assign tasks to volunteers.

Once water recedes, volunteers will be highly needed for cleanup.

“Just be patient because we are going to need you for the next several months because you can imagine all the trash and debris flowing into neighborhoods,” said Eddie Lee Herndon, United Way of Fort Smith president.

When floodwaters recede, skilled volunteers will be in high demand, including electricians, plumbers and furniture movers.

Training for those jobs will be scheduled soon.

For now, you can help by donating money or nonperishable items at the old Sears store at Central Mall in Fort Smith.
