The cost to clean up the stump dump fire in Bella Vista will be much higher than anticipated.
Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s office issued a news release stating that the cost of the Trafalgar Road fire in Bella Vista, commonly referred to as stump dump, will be $21 million to $37 million.
“The $21 to $37 million estimates for excavation are stunning and much higher than the initial estimates of $5 to $10 million,” Hutchinson said. “I have directed [the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality] and EnSafe, the engineering firm the state has contracted with, to explore more cost effective alternatives.”
Hutchinson said his office is also vigorously pursuing assistance from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, which he said will be necessary to help the cleanup project move forward.
“In the meantime, ADEQ and the Arkansas Forestry Commission (AFC) will immediately begin work to prepare the site for cleanup,” Hutchinson said. “This is a necessary step in the overall process and will not impede the project’s timeline as we study the above mentioned alternatives.”
