Group of Fort Smith Residents Oppose Tax to Fund Marshals Museum

News

Some in Fort Smith are opposed to a new tax for a multi-million dollar facility and spoke up about why they are against it.

Joey McCutchen, founder of the Transparency in Government Group of Western Arkansas, said the Marshals Museum concept was sold to the voters of Fort Smith as a privately funded enterprise.

McCutchen adds that seeking a tax to fund this museum is a betrayal of the trust of Fort Smith citizens.

“The state dollars come from we the people,” McCutchen said. “Now they want to hit us again with a local tax, a regressive tax so that we can go from the fourth highest sales tax in the state to number one.”

Arkansas ranks as the most regressive tax system in the United States, according to a recent study conducted by the institute on taxation and economic policy.
