Har-Ber Student Journalists Worry About School Administration Scrutiny

SPRINGDALE, Ark. (KFTA) — Students from the Har-Ber High School newspaper are worried any articles they print in the future will come under heavy scrutiny from the school district.

Students addressed their concerns at a school board meeting Tuesday night where Springdale Schools Superintendent Jim Rollins announced that a committee of journalism teachers will create a policy on how student articles will be managed moving forward.

The newspaper was suspended for publishing an article investigating the transfer of five football players in November,

In early December, the Springdale School District allowed the Har-Ber Herald to republish articles that had been removed from the school’s newspaper.

Jack Williams, a junior and member of the student newspaper staff, was at the meeting.

“Yes, we are in a pretty Byzantine bureaucratic gray area right now,” Williams said. “They may object at the notion that we are suspended, but our publication abilities have been trifled with.”
