Fort Smith city officials said Friday that FEMA won’t be able to go into any neighborhood until flood waters recede.

City Administrator Carl Geffken said that floodwaters are currently 18 feet above flood levels.

It’s important for residents to know that it is not safe to go around barriers or wade through the waters due to multiple factors.

“The police department will have all barricades and tape in place; please do not go around the tape or barricades,” Geffken said. “You could be cited or ticketed for doing so. The waters have potential issues, including venomous animals, and it’s for your own protection.”

Geffken said that if you do want to view the river safely, you can do so on the Garrison Avenue Bridge.
