Hot weather means more time at the pool, but officials are reminding you of ways to stay safe in the water.

Rogers Aquatics Center Supervisor Kevin Scherer said it’s best for swimmers to wear Coast Guard-approved life vests.

Scherer said you can tell if one is approved by checking out the label and looking for the Coast Guard stamp.

He also advises how parents can help with keeping their children safe during large gatherings.

“Have someone designated as a water watcher at that time the parent will put down their phone leave the conversation with the other parents, and their job is to watch the water — nothing else but to solely watch the water,” Scherer said.

Scherer also said to use hats and sunglasses and don’t forget to put on sunscreen to protect you from the sun.
