Hundreds of Students out Sick in Pea Ridge

A school district in Benton County reports just under 450 students were out sick Wednesday, and that number is continuing to rise.

Around 20 percent of Pea Ridge students were not at school on Tuesday and Wednesday due to the flu and other illnesses.

The school district saw a rising number of sick students at the beginning of the week.

Superintendent Rick Neal said if more students continue to become sick then the school district will close for a period of time, but doesn’t anticipate having to do so.

Some parents said they are keeping their kids home right now to keep them healthy.

“We are working extremely hard to try to wipe clean and do a lot of disinfecting right now across our buildings to be very precautionary,” Neal said.

“I’m sure the district is doing what they can to keep things clean and sanitized, but there is only so much they can do. I think the best way is just to keep them home and confined,” said Jennifer Ivy, parent of two sick students.

The district also said class will be out for a district professional development day on Monday and hopes that the school district won’t have to close down before that three-day weekend.
