Inmate Dies After Erratic Behavior He Blamed on Energy Drinks

A Sequoyah County Detention Center inmate died in a Sallisaw hospital Thursday morning.

The inmate, who has not been identified, seemed agitated and spoke erratically at around 9 a.m. Thursday. A nurse at the jail found that the inmate had good vital statistics. The inmate told the nurse that he was behaving erratically because he consumed energy drinks the night before, according to a Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office news release.

A short time later, the inmate was unconscious. Jail staff performed CPR, and the inmate was then taken to Northeastern Health Systems. He was pronounced dead at around 10 a.m., according to the news release.

The inmate was arrested Wednesday night around 8:30 p.m. and booked into the jail on a Benton County warrant for suspicion of felony theft of property, the news release states.
