Keeping Your Home Safe While Out of Town

News

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS, Ark. (KNWA) — With holiday shopping and travel, thieves are ready to strike, looking for those easy targets.

There are simple steps you can take to protect your home and gifts.

The Bentonville Police Department says every year it sees more home thefts. Most of these thefts happen during the day.

Police say there are several ways to make it harder for someone to get inside your home.

First, make sure all your doors remain locked — even if you’re inside.

If you have a holiday tree, try not to place it by a window where it’s visible from the outside and giving thieves a target.

Another way to protect yourself is by gift wrapping empty boxes to place under the tree instead of the real gifts.

And if you have a garage door, you can cut off access when you’re not home.

“Anytime that I’m going to be away for any extended period of time…I’ll kill the power to the garage door and also most garage doors if you look behind them in the inside, you’ll have a slide lock. Go ahead and gauge that. That will give you a little more strength in a large area,” Sgt. Gene Page said.

Sgt. Page says doorbell cameras don’t serve as a great deterrent anymore, but it can be a great investigative tool if you have a package stolen.

Sgt. Page recommends asking your boss if your packages can be delivered to your office or workspace, or have a stay-at-home family member accept packages.

Don’t become dependent on any one of these tools — use everything you got.

If you see something out of place in your neighborhood, be sure to contact your local police department.
