(CNN) – It was not meant to be for Serena Williams as Angelique Kerber comfortably beat the record-chasing American in straight sets to secure a first Wimbledon title and third grand slam.

Williams was chasing an eighth Wimbledon crown and a first major as a mum, which would have drawn her level with Margaret Court on 24 grand slam titles, but the 36-year-old suffered defeat in just over an hour.
