WASHINGTON COUNTY — There are new developments in the lawsuit and investigation surrounding two Washington County bridges.
Justice of the Peace Eva Madison sent a letter Thursday to the Arkansas Attorney General’s Office. In it, she asks Attorney General Leslie Rutledge to investigate the safety allegations raised in a former road department employee’s lawsuit.
Madison writes, “Considering the nature of the issues and allegations, I believe that your office is best suited and has the right resources, experience, and expertise to investigate these issues, which are of great interest to the taxpayers and citizens of Washington County.”
Former road department employee George Braswell filed a whistleblower lawsuit in December claiming that the Stonewall Road Bridge and Harvey Dowell Bridge were improperly constructed. He also says his attempts to notify county officials were ignored.
In mid-March, county officials received videos showing why the Stonewall Road Bridge in Prairie Grove is faulty. After seeing the video, County Judge Marilyn Edwards had the bridge demolished. In her letter to the attorney general, Madison says she’s concerned that the bridge was torn down before it could be inspected further.
Madison writes, “…the ordering of the demolition of the Stonewall Bridge before the Quorum Court and the public had been informed of the issues is troubling. The public may never know the full extent of the construction defects because the evidence may have been destroyed. Was the demolition of the bridges in this manner proper?”
