Residents are evacuating their homes as floodwaters swell the Arkansas River near Tulsa in northeastern Oklahoma.

Sand Springs Emergency Management Director Greg Fisher said Thursday that residents of 12 homes in a housing development of more than 150 west of Tulsa have been evacuated due to impending floods.

The potential for further river flooding prompted the Holley Frontier Tulsa Refinery to temporarily shut down. The Dallas-based company employs 650 full-time workers in Tulsa, processing 125,000 barrels per day of crude oil into gasoline and diesel fuel.

Officials in Tulsa say other residents along the river may be asked to leave their homes as the Army Corps of Engineers increases the flow rate at a dam northwest of the city to help drain a watershed flooded by severe storms.

The police chief in a southwest Missouri town says a tornado has done significant damage to 30 to 35 homes.

Chief Delmar Haase says the property damage in Carl Junction northwest of Joplin is likely, “in the millions,” and some high-voltage power lines were downed.

The National Weather Service was trying to determine whether a single or multiple tornadoes hit the area Wednesday night along a path of 50 miles.

He says an unknown number of the town’s 7,900 residents sustained minor injuries such as cuts, scrapes and bruises.

Three people were killed outside the village of Golden City. Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. John Lueckenhoff says four structures were damaged in the area and a fertilizer factory lost its roof.
