Local Christmas Parade Turns Controversial in Springdale

A local Christmas parade turns controversial after some people consider one float to be racist.

“My grandma always said too much sugar is not good for you,” Alice Gachuzo said. “It’s not always good to do what others do. You have to stand up and do what’s right.”

Alice Gachuzo took this advice and wanted to make a statement.

Gachuzo turned her back as the float of the Arkansas Sons of Confederate Soldiers traveled through the Christmas Parade of the Ozarks in Springdale on Saturday night.

“You have to apply to get into the parade,” Gachuzo said. “And to see that it was allowed to take place was shocking.”

Group President Trip Wilson tells me the Arkansas Sons of Confederate Veterans stands as a patriotic organization.

“There was nothing going on that was illegal, or illicit or wrong,” Wilson said. “Some people have a misconception of what confederate states were and what the war was about and people who have those misconceptions have preconceived ideas of what they’re feeling are. “

The Downtown Springdale Alliance says it did not organize the parade and released this statement.

“The November 24th Christmas Parade of the Ozarks float featuring the confederate flag and soldiers was not approved by DSA, nor is its message condoned by our staff or board of directors.

“I looked at the Facebook video and I don’t see anything wrong with it,” Wilson said. “In fact, I encourage them to do more community events.”

After living in Springdale for almost 25 years, Gachuzo says she’s seen the city become more accepting.

And this event to her – was a step in the wrong direction.

“I know it’s pride and heritage for people and I don’t want to take that away from them,” Gachuzo said. “But there is a time and a place for everything and this wasn’t one of those times.”
