Local Couple Celebrates 82 Years of Marriage

LOWELL, AR — 101 year-old Roy Edgmon has seen a lot of things, been a lot of places, and experienced a lot of special days, but there is one day that means the most to him.

“May 28th, 1933,” he said.

Eighty two years ago, that is when Roy married Vola. They actually both grew up in Newton County Arkansas but didn’t know each other well. That changed one day when Roy saw Vola at church and asked her out. Not long after they were married.

“I love him more now than I did when I married him,” Vola said.

They have had three kids, 10 grandkids, 30 great grandkids, 43 great great-grandkids and two great-great-great grandkids, and they say it wasn’t always easy.

“I could tell you a lot,” Vola said. “We had it hard but we were happy.

Vola said that the secret to a long marriage is simple: put in the time and effort.

(We)worked hard, both of us, worked together,” she said. “I say work don’t hurt you, if it had I’d done been dead.”

Roy said that it gets easier the longer you are married.

“Now you get along alright,” he said. “You’re getting too old to fight.”

So, Roy is 101, Vola 102, and they have been married 82 years, and they plan to be around to celebrate many more milestones.

“I told him awhile ago: ‘look at the miles these legs have went,'” she said. “We’re enjoying life still yet.”
