A local high schooler is in the running to be rewarded for her service to the community.
Lauryn Durby has been nominated as the “2019 Youth of the Year” for the Boys and Girls Club of Fayetteville.
Durby has been volunteering in the area for years and said she began giving back because she grew up with a father who served overseas and a brother who beat cancer.
She said she ultimately fell in love with volunteering.
“I enjoy being around children, I enjoy watching them laugh, I enjoy leading art projects and watching them show me their artwork,” Durby said.
Next week Durby will go to Little Rock where she will compete against 13 other Arkansas youths to become the statewide “Youth of the Year.”
If she wins she will get a $5,000 scholarship and will move forward to compete at a regional level.
