Local Master Gardeners celebrate milestone

A group with the best green thumbs in the county celebrated a major milestone.

The Benton County Master Gardeners celebrated its 25th anniversary today at the Peel House Museum in Bentonville.

The nonprofit is a division of the University of Arkansas and has 160 members involved in 15 annual projects.

Members plant gardens at various organizations and harvest veggies to give to low-income families.

Twenty-year member Mary Burks said it’s all about giving back to the community.

“You take a series of training. 120 hours of training to become a master gardener to begin with,” Burks said. “And then you have to keep and maintain 20 hours of community service.”

Last year, the Benton County Master Gardeners gave out  3,000 pounds of food to families in need.
