Flash flood erodes Rudy road

Local News

Thursday’s flash floods had a negative impact on Northwest Arkansas’ roads, but a portion of Old 81 Loop in Rudy completely collapsed due to erosion.

“[The floods] eroded the road away…it just continued to come so fast, so quick that it started eroding the road and eventually just cut it plum in two,” said Chris Keith, Crawford County’s road superintendent.

Road crews installed smaller culverts to stabilize the road until regulation-sized culverts can be attained. The temporary fix will open the road back up to drivers, hopefully by Saturday, Keith said.

“We work for the citizens of this county, and they drive these roads,” Keith said. “We need to make sure they have safe roads to drive on.”

While the 81 Loop proved to be the most-obvious damage caused by the flooding, several other Rudy roads were unprepared for the rushing water’s severity.

“With that much flash flooding, none of the culverts can carry that much water that quick, so we had a lot of washouts across the roads,” Keith said.
