Local Police Offer Tips for Safe Online Transaction Exchanges in Person

SPRINGDALE, Ark. (KNWA) — Springdale police remind you to be safe when making exchanges with unknown parties, especially with online marketplaces like Facebook and Craigslist becoming more popular.

Only steps from its front door, the Springdale Police Department has marked “safe drop” spaces in its parking lot.

It’s an amenity the department hopes creates a sense of safety for those making exchanges.

The areas can be used for anything from meeting someone new to avoiding the purchase of stolen goods, even custody exchanges.

“I know there’s situations where you may be selling appliances or furniture, things you may not have the capability to move. But when at all possible try to meet at a public location, and this is where we suggest meeting individuals,” said Capt. Derek Hudson with the Springdale Police Department.

Hudson added that you should always use cash in marketplace exchanges, never send money to a person before you meet them and be generally aware of scams outside the norm and around the world.
