Medical marijuana is one step closer to being grown here in Northwest Arkansas.
On Wednesday night the Benton County Planning Board listened to the Gentry community’s opinion about a medical marijuana facility being so close to their homes.
The business owner plans to build on 20 acres in Gentry at an old poultry house.
Tonight a representative of the business spoke in front of about 40 people about the safety concerns he’s heard. The business plan includes at least 200 infrared cameras onsite as well as 24/7 security in place.
The issue of oder in the area was also addressed. Representatives said no odors would be detected by the human nose.
With all of these plans in place the public still wasn’t convinced that this location would be best.
Cindy Dozier said she can see the facility location from her kitchen window but she’s worried about the type of danger it could bring to the area. “We’re a quiet community we all get along. We’ve got new families moving in and we just want it to stay safe. And the security out there, there’s just going to be a six foot fence? That’s not much security.”
Several people from that community also told us there have been multiple robberies in the area and they feel having this facility will only make the problem worse.
This issue was tabled and will be open for public comment again on September 20th.
