Locals Continue the Fight Against Breast Cancer in Inaugural “More Than Pink Walk”

Hundreds of Northwest Arkansas locals took a step in the direction of hope Saturday morning to educate people about breast health.

The first annual Susan G. Koman More Than Pink Walk, the replacement for Race for the Cure, isn’t your normal walk to raise money. It’s about educating and caring for those who have been touched in some way by the disease.

At the event, you could see lots of pink but also purple, green, blue and orange representing the new pillars of research, care, community and action.

Before walkers took off, dozens of survivors in Northwest Arkansas were recognized and celebrated. Those who were there in spirit were also recognized in the ‘We Remember’ booth where people could bring in photos and share the stories of the friends and family they have lost from breast cancer.

Koman of The Ozarks Executive Director Lauren Marquette says when the Susan G Koman Foundation first started it was all about awareness, the disease was rarely talked about in public. Now they’re able to show communities that it’s more than just raising awareness but taking action. Families that are remembering loved ones at the walk say they are proud to stand up and be more than pink.

“We’ve really moved fast past the realm of just awareness as well. So we’re saying we’re our more than pink walk that we’re more than just one color. We’re putting our values in action,” says Lauren Marquette.

“We’re walking in memory of my mother Loreda Jennings, and a friend’s mother and another friend’s mother. It’s important to educate the community about the early diagnosis so that people can get treatments early and survive,” says Susan Jennings, walk participant.

Almost $500,000 was raised after Walmart presented a $425,000 check to the Koman Ozark Foundation.
