It down poured this morning and as Meteorologist Melissa Hall will show us in a few minutes, there are some clouds on the distant horizon. When you plan a significant event like the NWA Championship, you have to be prepared for anything.
Harry Hardy, Tournament Director, “The weather, you can’t control it but you can plan for it. So we do have plans ready for every eventuality.”
With this being the 11th year of the LPGA NWA Championship, Pinnacle Country Club Head Golf Professional DJ Ransom says, weather is usually a factor but they have to remain ready. Ransom says the course should be ready for any rain or pop up storms that come their way.
“Course holds up pretty well. Granted some of the rain storms we get in northwest Arkansas they can slow play down a little bit so we may have some delays here and there,” said Ransom.
It would only take about an inch or two of rain to delay the tournament for hours and that’s not including the half an inch the course soaked up this morning. Tournament Director Harry Hardy says up until today the weather has cooperated.
“Thankfully we have had great weather the last three or four weeks since we have started building this event and all the temporary structures which has really helped us stay on schedule. Today and yesterday we did have some rain which mean we had to down tools,” said Hardy.
To ensure they are on top of the weather, the LPGA travels week to week with a professional Meterologist to monitor the weather and make decisions on suspending play.
“He is on site 24/7 to monitor the weather and makes sure we are equipped to handle whatever mother nature throws at us,” said Hardy.
“The lady professionals are used to it because they do it week to week but it can be frustrating from time to time sometimes but as long as it is safe, they will be playing out there in the rain and they are ready for that.”
Nearly 150 professionals not only will be competing against one another but also the elements.
The rain was actually so bad this morning that First Tee’s Drive, Chip and Putt competition was canceled, but fear not, t’s been rescheduled for next Sunday, the 25th, at the First Tee Learning Center.
