Man Arrested After Shooting at Washington Co. Deputy, Authorities Say

Authorities have arrested a man they say shot at a Washington County deputy on Sunday afternoon.

Washington County Sheriff officials say the traffic stop happened at around 12:43 p.m. 

According to a press release, a Washington County Corporal initiated a traffic stop on a driver traveling northbound on S. Barrington Road near Steele Road in Tontitown.

He said the driver refused to stop then turned eastbound onto Steele Road, slowed down, but continued driving. 

The driver then stopped on Steele Road. The corporal said when he stepped out of his vehicle, the driver opened his door and began shooting.

The corporal said he shot back and numerous rounds were exchanged before the suspect jumped back into his car and took off.

“He traveled a short distance, stopped and let a female passenger out of the vehicle, then took off again,” the news release states. 

A “Be On the Lookout” was then issued, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. 

A Springdale police officer was able to locate the vehicle on 71B near Shady Grove Road in Springdale. Police say shots were exchanged again. 

The suspect was then chased into Fayetteville, where Fayetteville Police and Arkansas State Police joined. But the suspect then went back into Springdale, according to the news release. 

The pursuit ended at Don Tyson and S. Thompson. 

Springdale police officers arrested and identified him as 29-year-old Luis Cobos-Cebobio. 

Officers said they noticed he was injured on his left arm/shoulder. 

Cobos-Cebobio was transported to Northwest Medical Center, where he was treated and released into their custody, according to the news release. 

No officers or deputies were reported injured in this incident.
