Man Dies After Medical Emergency While in Police Custody

News

The Fayetteville Police Department is investigating the death of a man who was in police custody.

Police said they stopped 23-year-old Phillip Jerriel Moore after he disobeyed a stop sign on March 20. Police said while they searched Moore’s car he ran on foot. Police followed him and found him hiding behind a bush. Moore later surrendered to police.

Police said they placed Moore in a police vehicle and requested an ambulance because Moore was complaining of leg pain and that his legs weren’t working. Central Emergency Medical Services evaluated Moore and released him to be taken to the Washington County Detention Center.

Police said during transport, Moore became unresponsive. Police stopped their vehicle and requested CEMS to provide treatment. CEMS arrived and transported Moore to Washington Regional Medical Services where he died the next morning.

Fayetteville Police said Moore’s death does not appear to be related to police force, but are investigating the cause of his medical emergency during transport. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is also investigating the death.

Moore’s body has been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab to determine a cause of death.
