Happening in Fort Smith Tuesday night, a three-hour long standoff caused neighbors quite a scare after shots were heard coming from one mans house.
Police responded to Bradley Drive and Churchill Road Shortly after 5 p.m. where an intoxicated man had barricaded himself inside his home after a domestic dispute.
Fort Smith Police as well as S.W.A.T teams blocked off the surrounding area and asked neighbors to stay inside their homes.
Law enforcement negotiated with Ismael Mejia, 52, to get him to come out of his home peacefully. Just after 8 p.m., police say they were about to get Meija to surrender without any incident.
“The individual had become intoxicated and fired non-life threading Shots out of his home, obviously though that was enough to concern the people in the area who had called,” said FSPD Public Information Officer Aric Mitchell.
Meija was taken into custody and will undergo a mental evaluation.
While the street was blocked off before to through traffic, police said it is once again safe to travel through the area.
