Many Construction Projects Ahead for I-49

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA) -- There are 17 construction projects happening or planned up and down Interstate 49, and they're all expected to be underway or finished in the next five years.

The most immediate goal is to make the entire interstate three lanes wide in both directions. Only one area in Rogers is still two lanes.

Danny Straessle with the Arkansas Department of Transportation said the area will be the first of it's kind in the state.

"It's called a single-point urban interchange.  Basically, there's one stoplight up underneath the bridge that controls access from 71 B to and from I-49, thus the term 'single point'," Straessle said.

Straessle went on to say the new interchange will handle traffic on the interstate and on Highway 71 much more efficiently than most.

The third lane of the interstate will be done first, then the interchange will be finished.
