Mike Huckabee Tours Hawkeye State

DES MOINES, IA via KARK– Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee wasted no time hitting the campaign trail in a hurry one day after officially announcing hes running for president.

His first stop the political battle grounds of Iowa. He’s visiting the Living History Farms here where it’s a tribute to and showcasing of agricultural development in this region using real farms.

He started the day visiting with folks at a coffee shop about an hour away in a small county square nearby a factory where his campaigning really began.

First stop, fire hydrants and water valves. 2016 presidential hopeful and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee visited Clow Valve in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

He spent the afternoon shaking hands and seeing how they work their craft in the 137 year old factory.

“It’s not just what you make but the people who make them,” Huckabee said.

The blue collar focus falling in line with his three day “Factories, farms and Freedom” rally. Speaking to the crowd of employees the Natural State native made it a point to reflect back on his own small town roots.

“My dad was a full time firefighter in the little town of Hope, AR,” Huckabee said.

And it’s his time there and battle in local government he points to that he says makes him a real contender.

“I’d like to think I’m gonna be taken seriously because I’m a responsible candidate, governed a state very effectively for a long time in a very hostile political environment,” Huckabee said.

But success is not guaranteed despite previous success in such a critical state where he’s starting his campaign.

“The disadvantage is that I have to go out and prove myself all over again and I can’t make the assumption that ‘Oh yeah, I’ve won Iowa so I’m gonna do it again’,” says Huckabee.

And he says he’s changing his campaign, focusing on the voters and his supporters.

“I make no presumption about it. I expect to work harder this time than I did in 2008 to win it,” says Huckabee.

Huckabee hopes to appeal to some of those same voters that got him that win back in 2008, but he plans on changing some things around, specifically fundraising.

KARK learned today that he does have a fundraising tour planned which will wrap up in Arkansas. That will happen at the beginning of June.
