Missouri Junior High Brings “The Outsiders” to Life

News

An English teacher at Nixa Jr. High School brought a scene from an award-winning novel “The Outsiders” to life.

Junior high English teacher Julie Ferguson partnered with the Nixa Police Department to recreate a scene from the book in which one protagonist Johnny Cade kills the antagonist Bob Sheldon in an act of self defense.

“We picked sections out [of the novel] to try and make it as realistic as possible, with the clothing and the blood splatter,” said Nixa D.A.R.E. Officer Brent Forgey.

The re-enactment of the chapter was intended to illustrate the scene and allow students to get a feel for crime scene investigations. Forgey brought in a detective from Nixa PD to walk students through the process of surveying the crime scene like police would if it were real. Students played the part of various figures that take part in crime scene investigations.

“We had the detectives, police that stood outside the perimeter, the media who tried to ask questions– and they weren’t very successful because they couldn’t tell them anything– we had the coroner and a prosecutor observing as well,” said English teacher Julie Ferguson.

After the evidence is analyzed by students, they will complete a mock trial to determine sentencing for the crime.

“I would guess [Johnny would be charged with] unlawful use of a weapon and first-degree murder because there was a death in the scene,” said Forgey.
