Mother of Sandy Hook Victim Teaches Proactive Approach To Prevent Mass Shootings

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KFTA) — There have been more than 300 mass shootings in 2018, which adds up to almost one per day.

It’s an all-too-common-occurrence in our nation right now that many are left wondering, “Why?”

One mom of a mass shooting victim is teaching educators and students a proactive approach to prevent and reduce mass shootings.

Scarlett Lewis is the founder of the Choose Love Movement. Her son, Jesse, was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting. The topic of the night is being part of the solution.

“Social-emotional learning cultivates safety from the inside out of a child,” Lewis said.

On December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, 6-year-old Jesse Lewis died a hero alongside 19 of his first grade classmates.

“He actually saved nine of his classmates lives before losing his own. He stood up to the gunman, yelled for his classmates to run, and its that example of courage i wanted to live my life by,” Lewis said.

Lewis says after realizing this tragedy was preventable, she created the Choose Love Enrichment Program for pre-k through grade-12 schools.

The program is taught in every U.S. state.

Locally, Fayetteville and Springdale schools have approved the program.

“The Choose Love Movement is a social and emotional learning program that teaches children and adults how to manage their emotions, how to have healthy relationships, and meaningful connections. Skills and tools for resilience. How to manage conflict,” Lewis said.

The goal is to be connected, resilient and empowered while creating safer, more peaceful and loving schools — so that no one has to suffer the pain of losing a loved one the way Lewis did.

“If you look at school shooters, they all lack social and emotional intelligence and these are skills and tools that must be taught,” Lewis said.
