New Legislation Aims to Lower Price of Hearing Aids

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — A new bill is aimed at making access to hearing aids easier, by making the devices more affordable.

Tens of millions of Americans have lived through hearing loss, and many of them cannot afford a hearing aid, which is intended to help alleviate the problems of hearing loss.

Republican Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn is the cosponsor of a bill that allows hearing aids to be sold over the counter. Blackburn says the bill will loosen regulations on hearing aid manufacturers, which will ultimately drive down prices.

Hearing aids can cost as much as $5,000 and are not covered by Medicare.

Blackburn said that as many as 80 percent of Americans have experienced some type of hearing loss, and cannot afford a hearing aid.
