New Mercy Hospital Program Helps Sex Assault Victims

ROGERS, Ark. (KFTA) — A new program at Mercy Hospital helps children and adults who have been victims of sexual assault.

The Sane Program allows sexual assault nurse examiners to provide medical care for the victims.

Mercy works with agencies like the Child Advocacy Center and Children’s Safety Center to identify the victims that need their care.

“So a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, their role is very important for victims of sexual violence. The role of the examiner is to also provide the medical services but also to coordinate the care after the initial medical exam is done,” Dawn Thompson, regional Sane coordinator.

Thompson went on to say that they also work with law enforcement and help collect evidence when it is needed.
