FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas Republican senators charged with a felony crime related to abuse of public trust will be asked to relinquish all committee and leadership assignments, officials say.

The Arkansas Senate Republican Caucus made this announcement on Wednesday.

This new policy comes after the revelation that Sen. Jake Files, R-Fort Smith, is under FBI investigation for wire fraud and money laundering. Files said he has yet to be charged with a crime. More about that investigation can be seen here

Sen. Jim Hendren, R-Gravette, said this new policy isn’t to presume guilt. It’s instead to ensure legislative business can continue without distraction.

“The Arkansas Senate republican Caucus is committed to ensuring that the people of Arkansas have confidence in the Arkansas State Senate and the integrity of its members,” he said. “It is clear greater accountability is needed regarding the utilization of General Improvement Funds.”
