On Monday a new family care home opened up in Springdale to help single moms and their kids. Crews broke ground on the Springdale “Family Care Home” less than a year ago. On Sunday, the doors finally opened. The new home will give single mothers a chance to overcome their struggles without having to stay at a homeless shelter.
“I just think about these ladies who don’t have anybody how are they going to do this? How are they going to survive?” Waylon Vande Hoef, Fayettville Area Director for Arkansas Baptist Children’s Homes & Family Ministries.
The new home will house up to seven mothers, their children and live-in case managers. While staying at the home, the single parents will learn life-skills like budgeting, goal setting and relationship building.
“It’s a chance. For them to just I don’t know, I can’t say it without crying. They’re getting another chance,” said Lindsay Hillyard, the Administrative Assistant for the Springdale Family Care Home.
The 7,000-square-foot home in Springdale was made possible by an organization called Arkansas Baptist Children’s Homes. It operates seven other homes across the state ranging from family to foster care. It’s something Northwest Arkansas mom, Lindsay Hillyard, experienced first hand.
“I was seven years old when my mom was killed in a car wreck. At the time, my father was not the best influence cause he was abusive. I chose to go there and it was the best decision I probably could have made in my life. I’m afraid of where I would be actually without this organization.” Hillyard said.
The new home in Northwest Arkansas will provide a stable environment for families as they navigate through difficult life circumstances. The ultimate goal? Helping families stay together.
“If the moms don’t have a support system then the cycle continues. When these kids have kids it’s going to be a cycle unless they break it and you need places like these family care homes that’s going to teach these moms and show their kids that they are loved.” Hillyard said.
