Thousands of Northwest Arkansas children are victims of abuse each year.
Ninety percent of them know their abusers, according to the Children’s Safety Center of Washington County.
To combat the problem, the nonprofit hosted a two-hour Stewards of Children Workshop Tuesday night geared toward adults.
Families learned how to prevent abuse from happening by understanding the facts of the crime, how to minimize one-on-one incidents and the steps to filing a police report.
Casey Atwood with the Safety Center said it’s crucial to have open and honest discussions to fight the problem head-on.
“For every one child that tells there are probably five that don’t,” Atwood said. “So if we’re seeing over 800 kids a year in our county alone, there are 17 centers like ours across the State of Arkansas. So it’s really the tip of the iceberg of how much it’s happening.”
Eight-hundred and thirty eight children walked through the Safety Center’s doors last year alone.
Ninety percent of them reported allegations of sexual abuse.
