NWA Family Reunites With Dog of Teen Killed in Accident

A bitter sweet reunion for a Northwest Arkansas family.
19-year-old Mckenzie Catron was killed in a car accident in Dothan, Alabama on Saturday.
Tuesday night, Dothan First Responders arrived at her sisters home in Bentonville with something of Mckenzie’s that had gone missing in the accident.

Mckenzie Catron was driving back from a family trip to visit her mom in Florida, with a friend and her dog, Kai, when her car hydroplaned, went of the road and into a utility pole.

Mckenzie was pronounced dead at the scene, her friend in critical condition, and her dog missing.

When the Dothan community got word Kai had run away after the accident, they rallied to find her, and Tuesday Kai was reunited with her family.

“Kai was her pride and joy, and she went everywhere with her,” Hayley Kidd, Mckenzie’s sister said.

19-year-old Mckenzie Catron was a Rogers High School graduate and a student at the University of Arkansas.

“She was goofy, she was fun, she cared about everybody else before herself,” Kidd said.

That selfless part of Mckenzie’s character is something she shares with the first responders who found her dog, Kai.

“It was never a question for the people that were looking and searching for the night and two days, we were dedicated, and we weren’t going to stop until we got her home, and thankfully she’s home,”
Jonathan Whaley Patrol Sergeant Dothan Police Department said.

Johnathan Whaley with the Dolthan Police Department drove nearly 800 miles Tuesday to reunite Kai with her family.

“Obviously we can’t take away the pain, but to give them back part of who she was is unbelievable,” Whaley said.

Something Mckenzie’s sister Hayley Kidd said she is beyond thankful for.

“They are the most amazing people I will ever meet. The fact that they did this, I’ve told them ‘thank you’ so many times, but thank you doesn’t even start to cover it, they are absolutely amazing,” Kidd said.
“My sister was my best friend, I still can’t believe she’s gone, and I keep thinking she’s going to come back.”

She said now, she has a little part of her sister back.

“I felt like part of Mckenzie was coming to me through Kai. It was the best feeling I’ve ever had in my whole life,” Kidd said.

She said having Kai home is the first step toward the family moving on.
