NWA woman shot and attempted to suffocate husband, deputies say

A West Fork woman is accused of shooting and trying to suffocate her husband while he slept.

Vera Wintrode, 61, was arrested Saturday on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder, according to a Washington County Sheriff’s Office probable cause report.

Thomas Dewayne Wintrode called 911 and reported that his wife shot him, and he was bleeding at their home in the 15100 block of Trace Branch Road, according to the report.

Vera Wintrode immediately surrendered to deputies, the report states.

Deputies investigated the home and found spent casings, blood and holes in the wall. Thomas Wintrode was taken to a hospital, according to the report.

“Vera declined to give a statement, but made several references that her life was over and had completely changed in just one day,” the report states.

Deputies spoke with Thomas Wintrode at the hospital, who said that he is trying to leave his wife and wanting to sell their home, but she does not want to, according to the report.

Thomas Wintrode went on to say that his wife came into their room and kissed him goodnight. He said not long after, his wife came back into the room, got on top of him and placed a pillow over his face, the report states.

“He believed she was trying to suffocate him. He pushed her off of him and started to move to the end of his bed to get into his wheelchair,” the report states.

Wintrode said he made his way into the hallway and then saw his wife holding what appeared to be a 9mm handgun, the report states.

Vera Wintrode fired several shots; many went through a wall and the doorway of the room, but one bullet struck her husband, according to the report.

Thomas Wintrode said he grabbed a .22 caliber gun and threatened that he would use it. He then call 911.

Vera Wintrode is currently in the custody of the Washington County Detention Center.
